2020 Administrator of the Year

Dr. Mike Havener, Kirkwood High School

This year is Mike’s 26th year working in the Kirkwood School District. Mike was a business teacher for five years, assistant principal for eight years, assistant superintendent for finance and operations for four years, and this is his ninth year as principal. He was the Journalism Education Association’s Administrator of the Year in 2015. His philosophy has helped KHS earn the JEA First Amendment Press Freedom Award more than any other school in the country.

From her letter of support for Dr. Havener, Kirkwood Call editor Maddie Meyer said “Every time we release another issue of The Call to the public, we personally deliver it to Dr. Havener as a thank you for supporting us every step of the way. He readily makes himself available for interviews and stands up for the staff when parents, faculty and school board members complain. Despite the backlash he sometimes receives from our stories, his support of the program never waivers. He did tease me one time about one of our cooking videos because he is not a fan of salmon, but he said he enjoyed watching the video and looked forward to watching more. He is genuinely interested in reading our paper and looking at our website because he is an advocate for student journalism and understands that students learn best when they have both the rights and responsibilities to work as professionals.”
