Loran Marquez, Fort Zumwalt West High School

Loran Marquez advises the Predator Yearbook and the FZ West HS magazine at Fort Zumwalt West High School in O’Fallon, Mo. Marquez has won numerous awards for her publications including several NSPA First Class ratings with marks of distinction for the Predator yearbook, is a Balfour National Sample, Balfour’s ‘Best of’ award (which is less than 3 percent of books published by Balfour annually) being featured in Yearbook Yearbook six years in a row and this year one of her magazine students placed in the Balfour National Great Shot Photo contest. In her free time Marquez enjoys spending time with her daughter Lianne, visiting her family in Texas, running, reading, traveling, hanging out with friends and taking care of her dog Shadow.

Marquez oversees the Predator yearbook (312 pages and with a 32-pg supplement) and the Z West magazine that publishes 8 to 10 issues a year. Marquez’s publications are a well-oiled machine. Marquez builds strong student leaders that run the classroom daily. The editors know what is expected of them and they delegate tasks for the designers, reporters and photographers. Her editors not only meet but exceed their deadlines. Marquez teaches the importance of ‘real world’ journalism and it shows when you observe her student editors. The editors are responsible for all facets of their publications and have a great deal of respect for Ms. Marquez, as she does for them.

Marquez is a members of several scholastic journalism organizations including: MJEA, CSPA, SNO and NSPA. Marquez attends the JEA/NSPA conference with several students annually and also assists with the critiques and judging. Marquez hosts a spring publications workshop at West for all advisers in her district along with fall and summer workshops.
