2016 Story of the Year Winners

State Winners Named in Story of the Year Contest

The Missouri Journalism Education Association is pleased to announce the Story of the Year winners for 2015-2016 .

  • Anna James  from Lafayette High School [story] (1,001+)  and Camille Respess, Ellie Tomasson and Alex Bernard from Clayton High School [story] (under 1.001) have been named MJEA’s Feature Story of the of the Year State Winners.
  • Madison Russell from Oak Park High School [story] (1,001+) and Kate Noble from Notre Dame de Sion [story] (under 1,001) have been named MJEA’s News Story of the Year State Winners.
  • Samantha Leal from Hickman High School [story] (1,001+) and Alex Bernard from Clayton High School [story] (under 1,001) have been named MJEA’s Opinion Story of the Year State Winners.
  • Reese Anderson from Kirkwood High School [story(1,001+) and Maggie Knox from St. Teresa’s academy [story] (under 1,001) have been named MJEA’s Sports Story of the Year State Winners.
  • Jordan Myers from Raymore-Peculiar High School [story] (1,001+) and Marie Orrick from Notre Dame de Sion [story] (under 1,001)  have been named MJEA’s Yearbook Feature Story of the Year State Winners.
  • Jack Barbiere from Kirkwood  High School [story] (1,001+) and Camille Goodwin from St. Teresa’s academy [story] (under 1,001)  have been named MJEA’s Yearbook Sports Story of the Year State Winners.  

These students submitted impressive pieces of work from this school year that were selected as the winners by a highly-qualified judging team. This is a wonderful honor for all the students and the schools they represent and are indicative of the the high quality of their publications programs.

The MJEA Individual Student awards were designed to honor the very best in student writing, photography, design and video storytelling in Missouri by selecting one winner in each of 21 categories. The state winners will receive a special medallion and certificate in the mail soon.

MJEA is the largest state scholastic journalism organization formed to help protect and enhance scholastic journalism in Missouri. MJEA works to provide outreach and support to advisers and journalism programs across the state. The organization supports free and responsible scholastic journalism by providing resources and educational opportunities, by promoting professionalism, by encouraging and rewarding student excellence and teacher achievement, and by fostering an atmosphere which encompasses diversity yet builds unity.
