2016 Design of the Year Winners
The Missouri Journalism Education Association is pleased to announce the Design of the Year winners for the 2015-2016 School Year..
- Sam Balmer from Kirkwood High School [design] (1,001+) and Lawrence Hu from Clayton High School [design] (under 1,001) have been named MJEA’s Newspaper Front Page Design of the Year State Winners.
- Charles Hamilton from Cape Central High School [design] (1,001+) and Mackenzie O’Guin from St. Teresa’s Academy [design] (under 1,001) have been named MJEA’s Newspaper Inside Page(s) Design of the Year State Winners.
- Gabriela Gable from Francis Howell High School [design] (1,001+) and Elizabeth Jackoboice from Notre Dame de Sion High Schook [design] (under 1,001) have been named MJEA’s Yearbook Design Inside Pages of the Year State Winners.
- Kate Dames from Eureka High School [design, design2, design3] (1,001+) and Lauren Dwyer from St. Teresa’s Academy [design, design2, design3] (under 1,001) have been named MJEA’s Yearbook Theme Design of the Year State Winners.
These students submitted impressive pieces of work from this school year that were selected as the winners by a highly-qualified judging team. This is a wonderful honor for all the students and the schools they represent and are indicative of the the high quality of their publications programs.
The MJEA Individual Student awards were designed to honor the very best in student writing, photography, design and video storytelling in Missouri by selecting one winner in each of 21 categories. The state winners will receive a special medallion and certificate in the mail soon.

MJEA is the largest state scholastic journalism organization formed to help protect and enhance scholastic journalism in Missouri. MJEA works to provide outreach and support to advisers and journalism programs across the state. The organization supports free and responsible scholastic journalism by providing resources and educational opportunities, by promoting professionalism, by encouraging and rewarding student excellence and teacher achievement, and by fostering an atmosphere which encompasses diversity yet builds unity.
